Public health: a challenge for Mayotte, the future fifth overseas department.

The island of Mayotte, a French overseas collectivity, will become an overseas department in 2011. This territory faces several public health challenges: difficulties in accessing healthcare for people without residency permits due to high migratory pressure, a significant portion of the population living in precarious conditions, an increased incidence of diabetes, and high rates of abortion and teenage pregnancy. The territory is gradually organizing itself to implement a system for prevention and health promotion.
