Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of October 30, 2018.

Epidemiological Situation

Since the beginning of 2018, 6,644 biologically confirmed or probable cases of dengue (including 9 imported from Polynesia, Brazil, Thailand, the Maldives, and Myanmar) have been reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion. The only serotype identified in 2018 among indigenous cases is DENV-2 (911 genotypes identified). This situation follows an unusual, low-level viral circulation during 2017, when persistent transmission was observed during the southern winter.

Data from October 8 to 21 (weeks S41 and S42):

  • 11 probable or confirmed cases of dengue were diagnosed through laboratory testing (including 3 in S41 and 8 in S42), based on the date of symptom onset

  • Confirmed and probable cases were located: - In the west: La Possession, Le Guillaume, La Saline, and St Paul Etang (1 case each), - In the south: Rivière Saint Louis (3 cases), Le Tampon, Saint Joseph, and St Pierre (1 case each), - In the north: one case in Sainte Clotilde
