Hospitalizations and deaths related to chikungunya in Réunion. Bulletin dated December 10, 2025.

Key points

Hospitalized cases

  • 554 cases hospitalized for more than 24 hours reported to the Santé publique France regional office in Réunion, including 138 severe cases;

  • 4 distinct groups among the hospitalized population: infants under 6 months, pregnant women, people over 65, and “others” (see definition below);

  • Infants under 6 months were often hospitalized for pain management;

  • Hospitalized patients over 65 years of age mostly had multiple comorbidities

Deaths

  • 45 deaths linked to chikungunya, including 22 directly linked;

  • Among these deaths, 2 were neonatal deaths;

  • Among the elderly, the majority of deaths were due to cardiovascular or respiratory causes in the context of decompensated multiple pathologies;

  • Chikungunya as a trigger for vulnerabilities.
