Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of June 17, 2022.

Key Points

COVID-19

  • In the Pays de la Loire region, the first two weeks of June were marked by a resurgence of the COVID-19 epidemic.

  • After declining for seven consecutive weeks, virological indicators began to rise again: the increase in incidence and positivity rates that began in Week 22 was confirmed and accelerated in Week 23. Hospital indicators, after five weeks of decline, have stabilized.

  • In Week 23, the regional incidence rate rose to 344* positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, representing a 50%* increase compared to the previous week. The testing rate showed a more moderate increase (+23%*) and the positivity rate was therefore also significantly higher (+4.6 points) compared to Week 22. Testing, incidence, and positivity rates were rising across all age groups and in all departments of the region.

  • Regarding healthcare utilization, the number of emergency room visits for suspected COVID-19 and the number of SOS Médecins calls for the same reason stabilized at a low level. Hospital indicators, which had previously been declining, also stabilized but at a moderate level. Admissions to intensive care and deaths among patients with SARS-CoV-2 remained stable in weeks 22–23; however, hospital admissions showed a slight increase in week 22 and then in week 23.

Extreme heat, heat wave

  • Since Wednesday, June 15 (4:00 p.m.), the region has been experiencing a particularly early heat wave affecting all departments in the Pays de la Loire region (Météo-France website).
