Abnormalities of the urinary tract

Congenital malformations of the urinary tract (also known as uropathies) are common and rank third in frequency after cardiovascular and musculoskeletal malformations. Renal malformations are generally distinguished from those of the urinary tract. However, an anomaly during embryogenesis can have a cascading effect on the development of the entire renal-urinary system.

Bilateral renal agenesis

Bilateral renal agenesis is a condition characterized by the failure of both kidneys to develop in the fetus. Renal agenesis is often associated with other congenital anomalies, particularly urogenital anomalies. Bilateral renal agenesis is not compatible with survival beyond a few hours; 60% to 80% of cases are male.
