Increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in a large French pediatric cohort, 2001–2003.
Introduction. The incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among young people is increasing in many countries, but few data are available in Europe. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of T2D at a French pediatric diabetes center. (R.A.) Methods. All new annual cases of diabetes admitted to the center from 2001 to 2003 were classified according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the pediatric classification. The annual prevalence of T2D was compared to the 1993–1998 period. Results. From January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2003, 271 new cases of diabetes (age <16 years) were admitted. The proportion of T2D cases was higher: 5.2% (n=14/271) in 2001–2003 than during the 1993–1998 period at the same center: 2.2% (n=8/370) (p=0.04). Patients with T2D (12 girls, 2 boys) had a mean age of 13.4 ± 0.5 years, a body mass index of 32.4 ± 7.7 kg/m², and a mean HbA1c level of 10.2 ± 3.1%; the majority were Caucasian (9/14) and had a family history of T2D (92%); 6 of them were initially treated with insulin, 6 with metformin, and 5 with diet alone. One year later, the mean HbA1c level was 6.9 ± 1.4%. Conclusion. These data, collected over nine years, although from a single center, demonstrate an increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes among children in France. French pediatricians should be made aware of the need to consider type 2 diabetes and distinguish it from other types of diabetes.
