Assessment of the management of infectious healthcare waste by healthcare professionals in private practice. Survey of private-practice healthcare professionals in the Dordogne (France), February–May 2009
Introduction - As part of its mandate, the Dordogne Regional Office of the Aquitaine Regional Health Agency sought to describe the practices of independent healthcare professionals (IHPs) regarding the disposal of healthcare waste posing an infection risk (Dasri) and to identify the factors associated with best practices. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2009. Methods - A random sample of 626 medical and paramedical PLS was surveyed via a self-administered questionnaire regarding the quantities and types of Dasri generated, as well as storage and disposal methods. Factors associated with these practices were estimated using a score (logistic regression). Results - Among the PLS surveyed, 85% reported producing sharps, 79% reported producing medical waste, and 15% (primarily nurses) estimated their monthly SHW production to be greater than 5 kg. Nearly 7% reported disposing of them in household waste, and 16% reported using non-compliant packaging for sharps. Among healthcare professionals using regulated disposal channels, nearly 65% reported having traceability documentation. Finally, 33% felt they lacked regulatory information. The profession was significantly and independently associated with compliance with regulations. Conclusion - This study identified a number of difficulties and instances of non-compliance with regulations that should prompt health authorities to establish priority actions in consultation with healthcare professionals.
