Gynecological Care for Women with Disabilities: Comprehensive Care Tailored to Women’s Needs and Expectations [Interview].
Béatrice Idiard-Chamois, a midwife, has established two clinics that are, to the best of our knowledge, the only ones of their kind in France: since 2006, a “Parenting and Disability” clinic within the mother-child department of the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (IMM) in Paris, and, in January 2015, a gynecology clinic. Both are open to women and couples with any form of motor, sensory, or mental disability. A woman with a disability who uses a wheelchair and has been awarded the Legion of Honor, this midwife has been fighting for over a decade to ensure that the fundamental rights of people with disabilities are respected: to have control over one’s own body; to have a child if one wishes; not being forced to use contraception; having the right to consent; and enjoying a fulfilling emotional and sexual life. She hopes to help change society’s perspective on the taboo subject of sexuality among people with disabilities. However, these specialized clinics remain the exception in France, highlighting how far we still have to go to reduce this inequality in access to fundamental rights.
