How do people react to health risks?

While the public’s reaction to health risks may not always seem rational, it nevertheless follows certain principles. Studies show that certain risks tend to be ignored, particularly if they are long-standing and familiar. Conversely, unknown risks can be a major source of anxiety. All of these psychosocial factors must be taken into account in order to develop prevention strategies tailored to the situations at hand.
