Leading causes of death in France in 2022 and recent trends

Introduction – This study describes mortality by cause of death in 2022, comparing its trends with those observed between 2015 and 2019 and in 2020 and 2021. Methods – Using death certificates for residents who died in France in 2022 and between 2015 and 2021, the medical causes of death were coded according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10). The underlying causes of death were grouped according to the European list of causes of death, to which COVID-19 was added. The number of deaths and age-standardized mortality rates were analyzed by cause, age group, and sex. Rates from 2020 to 2022 are compared to trend-adjusted mortality levels estimated using a Poisson regression model between 2015 and 2019. Results – The age-standardized mortality rate is stable across all age groups compared to 2021, but increases among people aged 85 and older. In 2022, tumors and diseases of the circulatory system (ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease) remain the top two causes of death, but diseases of the respiratory system have risen sharply and become the third leading cause of death. Thus, while mortality from COVID-19 declines, that from respiratory diseases rises and returns to a level close to that of 2019. Furthermore, the increase in mortality for most major causes continues in 2022, particularly for circulatory system diseases among women. Standardized mortality rates are significantly higher than what an extension of the 2015–2019 trend would suggest, particularly for diseases of the digestive system and external causes (household accidents, falls, suicides, etc.). Discussion – The deviations from past trends are consistent with international findings and help document changes in mortality since the COVID-19 pandemic.
