From Psychiatry to Mental Health: 200 Years of Turbulent History
The concept of mental health is a relatively recent one, having emerged in the wake of the transformations in psychiatry over the past two hundred years, particularly with the rise of the mental hygiene movement in the 1910s and 1920s. The 1990 legislation marked a turning point, signaling a shift from the fight against mental illness to a broader understanding of mental health that encompasses the general population. Nevertheless, the line between mental disorders and a holistic approach to mental well-being often remains blurred.
