Risk Perception and Monitoring of Health Behaviors: Insights from the Health Barometers.

The Health Barometers are surveys created in the 1990s by the French Committee for Health Education (CFES) and continued since 2002 by the National Institute for Prevention and Health Education (INPES), which track key behaviors, attitudes, and perceptions related to risk-taking and the health status of the population residing in France: smoking, alcohol use and other drug use, vaccination practices, sexual behavior, cancer screening, physical activity, nutrition, quality of life, sleep, accidents, pain, healthcare utilization, mental health... These surveys make it possible not only to study the determinants of these various topics but also to consider them themselves as determinants of the population’s health status. This chapter explains how this survey system, by enabling joint monitoring of risk perceptions and health behaviors, provides a heuristic framework conducive to a sound understanding of both.
