COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for February 3, 2022

Key Points

In Week 4, the spread of SARS-CoV-2 slowed nationwide, but epidemiological and hospital indicators remain very high.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates are declining or stable in most regions, but rising among those aged 70 and older

    • New hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care are stable or rising in most regions

    • Confirmation of an improving situation in Île-de-France

  • Overseas territories:

    • Highest incidence rates and new hospitalizations in Réunion

Contact tracing

  • Among those aged 75 and older, nearly one in five reported cases mentions having visited a long-term care facility (an indicator on the rise for the second consecutive week)

Variants

  • Omicron accounted for 97% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S03 survey of 01/17

  • BA.2 sublineage remains very rare but is on the rise (2% on 01/17 vs. 0.9% on 01/10)

Prevention

  • CoviPrev Survey Wave 31 (January 11–18):

    • 33% of parents support vaccinating their children aged 5 to 11

    • Mental health remains poor; one-third of respondents reported feeling anxious or depressed

  • Vaccination as of February 1, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • 78.6% of the total population had received a full primary vaccination series

    • 67.2% of those aged 18 and older had received a booster dose (77.5% of eligible individuals) and 81.4% of those aged 65 and older (89.7% of eligible individuals)

  • Importance of combined measures:

    • Complete vaccination schedule with a booster shot as early as three months

    • Adherence to preventive measures, including mask-wearing and contact reduction, as well as other recommended measures such as frequent ventilation of enclosed spaces, teleworking, and participation in contact tracing
