Key characteristics of the hospital patient population with HIV infection in France in 1996
This survey provides estimates of the number and characteristics of all people living with HIV who visit hospitals; the number of patients in active hospital care has been rising sharply since 1990. Between the hospital sector and private practice, nearly 82,000 people are treated annually, representing nearly 75% of people living with HIV in France. A large proportion of them (65%) are treated with antiretrovirals. Most receive combination therapy, and more than 18,000 are on protease inhibitors. Assessing the number of patients receiving care within the healthcare system is essential for tailoring care to patients’ needs as effectively as possible. (adapted from the text).
