Bulletin on Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Surveillance Networks as of December 31, 2008

Key Points

Gonococcal Infections

  • The trend in the number of gonococcal infections reported by the Rénago network shows a steady overall increase for both sexes through 2007, peaking in 2006.

  • In 2008, the trend was generally stable but varied by region: the number of gonococcal infections decreased in Île-de-France and increased in the provinces. Surveillance of gonococcal infections through the RésIST network is being established. The profile of affected individuals varies by region; the proportion of gay men is higher in Île-de-France, while the proportion of heterosexual women is higher in other regions than in Île-de-France. No resistance to ceftriaxone or cefixime has been observed in France.

Syphilis

  • The number of syphilis cases showed a slight decline between 2007 and 2008, despite a stable number of participating sites over these two years. A decline in sales of Extencilline® was also observed in Île-de-France, while in other metropolitan regions, sales continued to rise.

Rectal lymphogranuloma venereum

  • The number of cases of rectal lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) reported in the surveillance system stabilized in 2008 (174 in 2008 vs. 170 in 2007), as did the number of non-LGV Chlamydia trachomatis proctitis cases (83 in 2008 vs. 76 in 2007); 90% of cases of rectal LGV are diagnosed in Paris. These are predominantly homosexual men, most of whom are co-infected with HIV (93%).

Chlamydia Infections

  • Increase in 2008 in the number of tests performed and the number of Chlamydia trachomatis infection diagnoses: the number of diagnoses increased by 15% among men and 50% among women from 2007 to 2008 among the 55 laboratories that participated regularly from 2006 to 2008.
