Initial findings from the 2018 NOYADES survey in France: more drownings but fewer deaths

Santé publique France has released the initial results of the 2018 NOYADES survey. Between June 1 and July 5, the number of drowning incidents was higher than in the previous survey conducted in 2015 (552 versus 332), but these incidents resulted in fewer deaths (121 versus 147).

The NOYADES survey aims to record all drowning incidents resulting in hospital treatment (visits to emergency departments or hospitalization) or death, and covers all drowning incidents that occurred between June 1 and September 30, 2018, in France (mainland and overseas territories).

2018 Drowning Survey – Initial Results from June 1 to July 5, 2018

552 drowning incidents of all causes, including 121 deaths:

  • 257 accidental drownings, including 50 deaths (19%);

  • 34 intentional drownings (suicide, attempted suicide, assault), including 16 deaths (47%);

  • 261 drownings of undetermined cause, currently under investigation, including 55 deaths (21%).

Among accidental drownings:

  • Increase in accidental drownings among children under 6: 67 compared to 50 in 2015;

  • Among accidental drownings among children under 6, 43 (64%) occurred in private pools, 3 of which resulted in death;

  • The proportion of accidental drownings resulting in death increases with age: 9% among children under 6 versus 37% among those aged 65 and older.

Swimming carries risks at all ages; adopt the right safety habits

For children:

  • Swim with them;

  • Designate an adult to supervise them.

For adults:

  • Be mindful of your physical condition;

  • Swim in supervised areas and enter the water gradually;

  • Avoid heavy meals and drinking alcohol before and during swimming.

The risk of feeling unwell is even greater if the water is cold or after prolonged exposure to the sun.
