French Eating Habits: Results of the 2002 Health and Nutrition Survey.

The so-called "traditional" French dietary pattern is based on the central concept of meals. This article describes current dietary practices. The survey was conducted among a representative national sample of 3,153 people aged 12 to 75. Dietary practices were recorded using a food recall method, in which participants reported the foods they had consumed the previous day. Ninety percent of French people eat three main meals daily. More than half (52.5%) of French people divide their daily food intake into three meals, and one-third (32.8%) into four meals. The structure of the two main meals typically consists of three courses at lunch (38%) and two at dinner (38.7%). Sharing meals with family or friends remains very common. One in two households eats dinner while watching television. The primary location for the three main meals remains the home. This study confirms that the traditional French dietary model persists in at least two of its three dimensions: the existence of three main meals and their daily rhythm, and the practice of eating together. However, there is a trend toward simplifying the structure of the two main meals. [author’s summary]
