Promoting physical activity: It’s time for policymakers to take action!
It is unrealistic to expect to increase a population’s physical activity by focusing solely on motivation. The key lies elsewhere: in supportive policies implemented at all levels—from local to national, and across sectors ranging from work and education to leisure. This is the concept of “health in all policies.” The quality of the living environment promotes physical activity as well as human relationships: researchers in Atlanta have established that social connections are an important factor in engaging in physical activity. This activity should not be viewed through the lens of competitive sports, but rather as a practice rooted in daily habits that brings pleasure.
