Registration is now open for “Mois sans tabac,” a group challenge that encourages smokers to quit for 30 consecutive days. This national event, organized by the Ministry of Health and Healthcare Access and Santé publique France, in partnership with the French National Health Insurance, has become a must-attend since its launch in 2016.
Smoke-Free Month aims to encourage smokers to quit as part of a collective effort, with the support of their friends and family. Every year, resources are made available to them, including the Tabac Info Service website and a dedicated hotline, 39 89, which offers free access to consultations with a tobacco specialist. Nearly 6 out of 10 smokers want to quit: preparing yourself and getting support means giving yourself the best chance to succeed in the challenge of a smoke-free life.
39 89 at the Heart of Tobacco-Free Month
For its 9th edition, Tobacco-Free Month continues to reinvent itself to offer smokers a significant opportunity: the chance to break free from tobacco as part of a collective effort. This initiative, which is increasingly inclusive and participatory, strengthens the support provided to smokers throughout their journey to quit. Thanks to the renewed commitment of Santé publique France and its partners, we are mobilizing all resources to build together a future where smoking will no longer have a place in France.
Smokers wishing to take on the challenge can register starting October 1 on the official website. There they will find free resources, access to the mobile app developed by the National Health Insurance in partnership with Santé publique France, and information on events organized near them.
Nearly 160,000 smokers have signed up to take on the challenge in 2023. Quitting smoking for 30 days increases the chances of long-term success fivefold.
This process, which can sometimes be difficult, can be made easier with regular, personalized support: this also helps stack the odds in your favor.
That is why, in 2024, signing up for the challenge has been simplified, and smoking cessation support tools are at the heart of the campaign—notably through the promotion of the 39 89 helpline, which has been proven effective in supporting smokers1. A new 15-second tutorial will be broadcast across various channels (TV, OOH, digital) to highlight the 39 89 helpline and encourage its use.

A renewed partnership with the show “France’s Got Talent”
Following the success of 2023, Smoke-Free Month is continuing its partnership with the M6 Group and its flagship program, “La France a un Incroyable Talent.” Host and magician Eric Antoine invites smokers to participate in Mois sans tabac and discover tools to help them quit. Two new commercials will air: the first promoting the 39 89 helpline, and the second aimed at smokers’ loved ones to encourage them to support their family members in their journey to quit smoking.
A major media campaign to support this new edition
From October 6 through November 3, a 30-second TV spot titled “La Boum” and an educational tutorial on the 3989 hotline to encourage smokers to use it will air on television. Also available as online videos, they will be supplemented on this platform by three additional tutorials highlighting the Mois sans tabac website, the Tabac info service app, and the smoking cessation kit. On the radio, two spots encouraging registration for Mois sans tabac will air before and a few days after the challenge begins, and four others during the challenge, including one in digital audio.
This media campaign is complemented by a large-scale poster campaign rolled out in over 18,000 pharmacies, as well as in shopping malls, local stores, train stations, and—for the first time—on screens at gas stations. On the digital front, social media posts and banners are visible on numerous platforms (Facebook, Instagram), and a partnership has been established with a TikTok influencer.
Healthcare professionals, organizations, and businesses are always on board
Smoke-Free Month is a challenge we tackle together, thanks to the support of various stakeholders (healthcare professionals, partners, local businesses, loved ones, etc.) who guide, motivate, and support participants in staying committed to quitting smoking. Healthcare professionals play a central role in raising awareness, advising, and supporting smokers as they work to quit.
At the same time, health organizations also help spread information and organize awareness campaigns, particularly targeting the most at-risk groups. Finally, companies are becoming increasingly involved by promoting “Smoke-Free Month” among their employees and offering internal initiatives to facilitate smoking cessation. This collective effort, in which every stakeholder contributes their support, makes “Smoke-Free Month” a national initiative with concrete and lasting effects on public health.
Engaging as many stakeholders as possible: more than 6,000 partners have ordered resources to help people who want to quit smoking
Since its first edition in 2016, Smoke-Free Month has been building a network of partners that grows year after year. It includes local governments, associations, private companies, and more. They can already order and download free resources to help them promote the campaign. More than 1,800 partners have already ordered resources from the dedicated website.

We all deal with the urge to smoke differently, but we’re all in this together to quit
To support smokers in their efforts to quit, Tobacco-Free Month relies on tools available for free through Tabac info service, a major resource for smoking cessation support, which includes:
the Tabac info service website, which offers a wealth of support content and tools (connecting you with a tobacco specialist, testimonials, Q&As, etc.);
the 39 89 hotline, Tabac info service’s remote support line (a “non-premium-rate” number available Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), which connects callers with a tobacco specialist and offers free follow-up support. Since May 31, 2023, 39 89 has been accessible to deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals via the Acceo platform.
the Tabac info service e-coaching app, developed by the French National Health Insurance in partnership with Santé publique France and with the support of the Francophone Society of Tobacco Control, which offers a personalized e-coaching program to maximize the chances of quitting smoking
