Santé publique France and the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) have signed a framework agreement to strengthen their joint efforts to better understand and prevent the impacts of the environment and climate change on health. Several priority areas have been identified for the next five years: air quality, climate change, contaminated sites and soils, and health prevention and promotion.
Santé publique France and ADEME share a common mission across two complementary fields: creating and promoting behaviors and environments that are beneficial to health and the environment. In this context, inter-agency collaborations have existed for several years, particularly regarding the impact and prevention of outdoor air pollution as well as sustainable food systems. Other shared themes are being explored, such as indoor air quality, climate change, sustainable transportation, contaminated sites and soils, and, more broadly, prevention—the most recent initiative in this area being the Agir pour bébé website.
Santé publique France and ADEME share a model of agencies with both national and regional responsibilities. Both organizations work to translate expertise into action. With this agreement, our goal is to strengthen our complementary strengths and build lasting synergies between our two agencies, particularly regarding the impact of climate change on health.
By formalizing their collaboration, Santé publique France and ADEME aim to strengthen the complementarity and cross-cutting nature of their respective expertise, notably to carry out health and environmental prevention initiatives for the general public. More specifically, climate change and its impacts on the environment and health are driving the development of projects and actions that are integrated into the programming and operations of both agencies.
The goal of the partnership signed by Santé publique France and ADEME is to strengthen their cooperation in three areas:
Soil and air pollution, heat waves… the environment and climate have major impacts on human health. With this agreement, we aim to strengthen our synergies and combine our expertise to better share knowledge and solutions that can be implemented to improve our quality of life and prepare us for a changing climate.
The development of coordinated actions toward common goals; such as supporting local authorities in conducting quantitative health impact assessments of air pollution
Mobilizing expertise and solutions in the areas of prevention and awareness-raising, particularly regarding climate change;
Strengthening collaboration in the context of local initiatives (e.g., contaminated sites and soils, health-promoting urban planning, indoor environments…).
Santé publique France addresses the need for a center of reference and expertise in public health in France.
Based on the continuum between knowledge and action, our mission is to improve and protect the health of the population. Our work addresses major public health challenges over the long term, in the areas of protection against threats (including infectious risks, environmental risks, etc.) on the one hand, and health improvement (health determinants, prevention, health promotion, and reducing the burden of chronic diseases, social and regional inequalities, etc.) on the other.
