Health authorities are warning parents and caregivers of young children about the risks of swallowing magnetic beads. Such incidents can lead to very serious complications.
Two serious cases of accidental ingestion of magnetic beads measuring 3 to 5 mm have recently been reported; they involve children aged 3 or younger. The magnetic beads in question came from “stress-relief” items intended for adults. Furthermore, according to data available to health authorities, magnetic beads used in certain building blocks can also be accidentally swallowed by young children.
What are the risks?
If swallowed, magnetic beads can clump together, block the digestive tract, and tear the intestinal walls, causing perforations; they are significantly more dangerous than inert objects of the same size (glass marbles, coins). The most serious cases require major surgery and can be life-threatening for children.
How can the risk of ingestion be prevented?
It is essential to keep objects containing magnetic beads strictly out of children’s reach, as they might mistake them for candy and swallow them.
What should you do if a child swallows one, even if it’s just a suspicion?
Immediately call a poison control center, which will provide medical advice and instructions on what to do: www.centres-antipoison.net. In a life-threatening emergency, call 15 or 112.
In general, products containing magnetic beads (“building blocks” or “desk gadgets”) are not intended for children under 14 and are therefore not subject to any specific regulations. In such cases, the General Safety Obligation (OGS), defined in Article L. 421-3 of the Consumer Code, applies to these products. In this case, the manufacturer of products containing magnetic beads must inform the consumer that these products, although not intended for children, must be kept out of their reach as they may be dangerous to them.
If the magnetic beads are toy accessories, they must comply with European Directive 2009/48/EC on toy safety. Parents and caregivers of young children should ensure they choose toys appropriate for the child’s age, carefully read the instructions before using the toy, and take the time to explain how it works to the child.
In the case of products declared hazardous, either under the OGS or under the Toy Safety Directive, they will be subject to recall and withdrawal measures by the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF).
Parents and caregivers are nevertheless advised that stress-relief items intended for adults, construction sets intended for people over 14 years of age, and magnetic toys intended for older children (ages 3 to 14), can be very dangerous for younger children if left within their reach and if they inadvertently misuse them.
