Santé publique France has published five new indicators on the circulation of COVID-19 variants on Géodes to ensure the most accurate monitoring of the epidemic as these variants become more prevalent. This will involve tracking the spread of the 20I/501Y.V1 (UK) variant and the 20H/501Y.V2 (ZA) or 20J/501Y.V3 (BR) variants by department and age group based on screening data. This data is made available as open data. This brings the total number of indicators for monitoring the COVID-19 epidemic on Géodes, the cartographic observatory of epidemiological indicators, to over 123.

Indicators by age group and by department

As we enter a new phase of the epidemic in which the so-called “English” variant has become the dominant strain, analysis of the results from screening tests for variants of interest collected via SI-DEP shows a proportion of suspected cases of the 20I/501Y.V1 (UK) of 59.5% and 6.3% for variants 20H/501Y.V2 (ZA) or 20J/501Y.V3 (BR), Santé publique France is now offering new open-data indicators based on the SI-DEP database to track the evolution of variants.

These new indicators are available on Géodes based on screening and suspected case data reported through the SI-DEP. They include:

  • Number of screening PCR tests and the percentage of screened tests

  • Number of suspected cases for the 20I/501Y.V1 (UK) variant and the percentage among screened tests

  • Number of suspected cases for variants 20H/501Y.V2 (SA) or 20J/501Y.V3 (BR) and the percentage among screened tests

  • Number of suspected cases of another variant and the percentage among screened tests

  • Number of tests with results indicating no variant and the percentage among screened tests

These data can be broken down by department and age group. The goal here is to track the proportion of variants of interest in screened tests, to determine whether it is the so-called “English” variant on one hand or the so-called “Brazilian” or “South African” variants on the other.

Over 100 indicators to closely monitor the epidemic via open data

Since March 23, 2020, the Agency has provided a set of indicators derived from various surveillance systems at all levels (national, regional, departmental, and local). All of this surveillance data is available on the Géodes website as open data, providing transparent, unrestricted access to the reference data on which health analyses and recommendations are based, in support of public policy decisions. It reflects the emergence of new cases and infections—as well as their temporal and spatial trends—as early as possible, thereby enabling a better understanding of the epidemic’s progression.

"Since the start of the epidemic, our goal has been to make all data from surveillance systems available to everyone: infections, hospitalizations, intensive care admissions, mortality, vaccination coverage, and now variants. These indicators are deployed as close as possible to populations and regions and provide the basis for the strategy to combat the epidemic. By making this data accessible to everyone through open data—from citizens to decision-makers and all stakeholders—everyone can fully contribute to a better understanding of the epidemic and, consequently, to its prevention," notes Laetitia Huiart, Scientific Director at Santé publique France.

Open-data figures on COVID-19 monitoring

  • 400 megabytes of data processed every day

  • Over 35,000,000 visits to Géodes since March 23, 2020, and the publication of the first COVID-19 indicators
