Health Monitoring in Normandy. Bulletin of August 7, 2026.

Key Points

Heat Wave, Extreme Heat

  • The third heat wave of the summer affected Normandy from July 8 to 16. Changes in heat-related indicators during heat waves were the subject of dedicated weekly bulletins.
  • Visits to emergency rooms and calls to SOS Médecins for iCanicule (hyperthermia/heatstroke, hyponatremia, dehydration) increased during weeks S28 and S29, which covered the heatwave period.
  • Other syndrome groups that had increased during the second heatwave (fainting spells, ENT infections and skin conditions, isolated fevers) also showed an increase, but to a lesser extent than during the June heatwave. They have since declined, though some have not yet returned to their baseline levels.

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

  • Since the start of enhanced surveillance (May 1), several people residing in the region who had traveled to an endemic area have contracted an arbovirus; these cases have been reported as imported cases. These include 15 cases of dengue, mostly imported from Martinique, and 2 cases of chikungunya, imported from Madagascar and French Guiana.
  • No locally acquired cases have been detected in Normandy.

Back-to-School Asthma

  • Every year, starting in the first week of the new school year, an increase in asthma attacks among children is observed, leading to increased use of medical care. Several factors may explain this phenomenon, including the discontinuation of their maintenance therapy during summer vacation.

All-Cause Mortality

  • In July, mortality rates remained within the usual range of fluctuation. The number of deaths reported via electronic certification (source: Inserm-CépiDc) remained stable in July.
