Public Health Bulletin on Tuberculosis in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region. 2015–2020 Report. September 2022.

Key Points

  • The reporting rate has remained stable in the region over the past three years and is below the national average. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes remains the 4th metropolitan region in terms of reporting rate in 2020.

  • Reporting rates vary widely by department. In 2020, the highest rates were found in Haute-Savoie and the Rhône, while the lowest rates were in Ardèche and Haute-Loire. These 2020 data should be interpreted with caution due to the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare utilization and reporting.

  • In 2020, the majority of cases were still among people born abroad. The reporting rate among people born in France tended to decline over the 2010–2020 period.

  • Pulmonary and associated forms were the most common in 2020, and less than half of these forms (44%) tested positive on microscopy. Severe forms remain rare: less than 6% of cases in 2020.

  • The number of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis cases also remains low, accounting for less than 2% of cases diagnosed in 2020.

  • Over the 2015–2018 period, 52% of reported cases had information on treatment outcome, with significant variation across departments. Among these, nearly 80% had completed their treatment.

  • Between 2017 and 2021, a major cluster of monogenic tuberculosis (L2/Beijing SIT1 lineage strain) was investigated in the Ain department, identifying 31 cases of active tuberculosis during the 5-year follow-up period.
