Key Points

COVID-19

Deterioration of the regional COVID-19 epidemiological situation: increase in the incidence rate (IR) and positivity rate (PR), accompanied by an increase in the testing rate. The regional IR rose from 784.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 9 to 1,002.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 10. The IRs in two departments exceed 1,000 per 100,000 inhabitants: +255 points in Côtes d’Armor, +308 points in Finistère, +198 points in Ille-et-Vilaine, and +106 points in Morbihan.

Increase in general care hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and stabilization in the use of SOS Médecins and critical care hospitalizations. Estimated vaccination coverage by place of residence stands at 84.4% for one dose and 83.6% for a full course.

Bronchiolitis

  • Non-epidemic activity

  • Oscour®: low activity with 37 emergency department visits in S10 (compared to 40 in S09). Bronchiolitis accounts for 4.0% of diagnoses made in the emergency department among children under 2 years of age, and 27% of these visits resulted in hospitalization.

  • SOS Médecins: stabilization at a low level in the number of SOS Médecins consultations for bronchiolitis (n = 5 consultations in S10). Bronchiolitis accounts for 3.4% of diagnoses in children under 2 years of age.

  • Virology data: sporadic detection of RSV in S10 according to data from the virology laboratories at the Brest University Hospital (3/559) and the Rennes University Hospital (1/256).

Gastroenteritis

  • High activity. Very high activity among children in hospital emergency departments.

  • Oscour®: increase in the number of emergency department visits for gastroenteritis in Week 10 compared to Week 09 (n = 350, or +23.7%) across all age groups. This increase affects children under 5 years of age, who account for 69% of cases. In week 10, gastroenteritis was the third most common condition among children under 5, behind trauma and isolated fevers; gastroenteritis accounted for 13.1% of visits among children under 5 (compared to 2.1% across all age groups).

  • SOS Médecins: The number of SOS Médecins consultations for gastroenteritis has stabilized, with 197 consultations for this diagnosis in Week 10 (compared to 189 in Week 9, a decrease of 4.2% across all age groups). Across all age groups, gastroenteritis accounts for 7.2% of total SOS Médecins activity and 8.0% among children under 5.

  • Sentinelles Network: moderate activity in week 10: incidence rate of acute diarrhea cases seen in general practice consultations estimated at 124 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [62; 186], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).

  • Virology data: According to data from the Virology Laboratory at Brest University Hospital, viral circulation of Rotavirus (positivity rate = 41% (16/39)), Adenovirus (positivity rate = 5.1%, 2/39), and Norovirus (positivity rate = 15.0%, 3/20). According to data from the Virology Laboratory at the Rennes University Hospital, viral circulation of Rotavirus (positivity rate = 25.0%, 6/24); no positive samples for Astrovirus, Norovirus, or Adenovirus; the Virology Laboratory at Rennes University Hospital also reports viral circulation of sapovirus (3/24); this virus will now be monitored as part of this epidemiological update.

Influenza and influenza-like illness

  • Epidemic activity, rising phase. Intensification of the epidemic, particularly affecting Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan.

  • Oscour®: increase in the number of emergency room visits in S10 compared to the previous period (n = 174, or +42.6%) across all age groups. This increase affects all age groups. 13.2% of these visits resulted in hospitalization.

  • SOS Médecins: sharp increase in the number of SOS Médecins consultations for influenza in Week 09 (n = 332, a 41.9% increase) across all age groups. This increase affects all age groups. This condition accounts for 12.1% of diagnoses coded by SOS Médecins (all ages).

  • Severe influenza in intensive care: since November 2021, 8 cases of influenza have been admitted to intensive care (7 type A, including 1 A(H3N2), 1 untyped).

  • Sentinelles Network: incidence rate of acute respiratory infection (ARI) cases seen in general practice consultations estimated at 242 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [149; 335], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).

  • Virology data: According to data from the Virology Laboratory at Brest University Hospital, there has been an increase in the number of positive influenza A samples (positivity rate = 2.0%, 29/1,457). According to data from the Virology Laboratory in Rennes, there has been an intensification of influenza A virus circulation (positivity rate = 33.2%, 85/256). Influenza B virus has not been detected in samples analyzed by these two laboratories since the start of the season.
