Public Health Bulletin on Alcohol in the Grand-Est Region. January 2020.

Key Points

  • In 2017, among adults aged 18–75 living in the Grand Est region: one in 10 (10.4%) reported drinking alcohol every day, and one in seven (15.2%) reported at least one heavy drinking episode (HDE, at least six drinks on a single occasion) every month. Among 18- to 30-year-olds, one in four (24.0%) reported at least one API every month, and 7.5% reported at least one every week.

  • The health consequences were numerous, with significant disparities between departments. In 2017, 1.32% of emergency department activity in the region was directly related to alcohol (primarily for acute alcohol intoxication)—3.12% among those aged 45–60—with the highest rates observed in Meurthe-et-Moselle and the Vosges. The Ardennes also had a high mortality rate from the main conditions directly linked to alcohol.
