COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of August 5, 2021

Key Points

  • In Week 30, epidemiological indicators showed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was still circulating widely in the Île-de-France region, although the trend appeared to be stabilizing. However, the situation remained dire amid rising numbers of new hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care, widespread transmission of the Delta variant, declining public adherence to preventive measures, and still-incomplete vaccination coverage.

  • In Île-de-France, the regional incidence rate for week 30 stabilized after four consecutive weeks of increases, settling at 185 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The testing rate continued to rise across all age groups except for the oldest (65 and older), where it remained stable. The positivity rate remained stable after three consecutive weeks of increases.

  • In week 30, the proportion of primary care visits for “suspected COVID-19” stabilized at SOS Médecins clinics and continued to rise in emergency departments. At the hospital level, the increase in indicators for new hospitalizations and new admissions to critical care intensified, confirming the impact on hospitals of the rise in the number of new cases observed in previous weeks. The number of reported deaths in hospitals among COVID-19 patients increased for the second consecutive week.

  • As of August 2, 63.8% of the Île-de-France population of all ages had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 53.0% were fully vaccinated. The rate of single-dose vaccination coverage increased slightly among 12- to 17-year-olds, decreased slightly among 18- to 29-year-olds, remained stable for other age groups, and remained low among people aged 50 and older. Against a backdrop of significant viral circulation, widespread transmission of the Delta variant, and summer vacations, vaccination of all eligible individuals—particularly those in contact with vulnerable people—must be strongly encouraged with the goal of achieving a sufficient level of herd immunity as quickly as possible and avoiding further strain on hospitals.

  • Alongside vaccination, it is also essential to maintain a high level of adherence to preventive measures, particularly the observance of protective measures, limiting risky contacts, and self-isolation in the event of symptoms, a confirmed infection, or contact with a confirmed case.
