Exploratory analysis to identify factors influencing the severity of everyday accidents, Réunion Island, France. Data from the EPAC study, 2005–2009
Introduction - The Gabriel Martin Hospital Center (CHGM) in Réunion has participated in the surveillance system of the Permanent Survey on Accidents of Daily Life (Epac) since 2005. Methods - This surveillance is based on the recording of information in the emergency department regarding patients treated following an accident of daily life (AcVC), including the severity of the accident. A logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for this severity. Results - The locations with the highest risk of serious accidents appear to be public roads, amusement parks, racetracks, and public parks. Certain activities stood out, such as roller sports and activities involving animals. DIY activities were found to cause serious falls from stepladders, ladders, or roofs. The mechanisms leading to serious AcVCs are primarily tree falls, burns, suffocation, and asphyxiation. Discussion - The CHGM’s severity coding is subjective. Nevertheless, the results of this exploratory analysis have allowed us to identify relevant risk factors for severity and demonstrate that the “severity” variable is useful. These results may guide prevention campaigns in Réunion to limit the accidents most likely to result in long-term consequences. (R.A.)
