COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Mayotte: Epidemiological Update as of November 17, 2022
Key Points
Significant increase in indicators for all respiratory infections. Influenza and bronchiolitis have reached epidemic levels.
COVID-19
Circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been on the rise in Mayotte for the past two weeks. The incidence rate, which was still below 5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 42, has risen significantly, increasing from 25.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 44 to 65.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 45. This represents a 159% increase in one week.
This increase in COVID-19 indicators is observed in Mayotte, while the incidence rate—adjusted for the effect of the public holiday and calculated based on antigen tests (TAG)—was trending toward stabilization in metropolitan France. In the overseas departments and regions (DROM), incidence rates adjusted for antigen tests were stable or rising but remained at very low levels in week 45.
Flu
Epidemic phase
Virological surveillance of influenza in hospitals showed a sharp increase in the circulation of influenza viruses in S44 (n=10) and S45 (n=19), predominantly type A(H1N1).
Bronchiolitis
Epidemic phase
Virological surveillance of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in hospitals showed a sharp increase in viral circulation between S44 (n=2) and S45 (n=16). The onset of the bronchiolitis epidemic is early, as the typical season for bronchiolitis usually runs from January to April.
