Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of April 2, 2019.
Key points
In weeks 11 and 12, 1,541 and 1,822 people, respectively, sought medical care for symptoms clinically suggestive of dengue, bringing the total to more than 10,752 since the beginning of the year and more than 37,132 since 2018.
More than 800 cases are reported per week (743 in week 11 and 843 in week 12), including 27 and 37 positive rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), respectively, bringing the number of reported cases to nearly 4,000 since the start of the year and to 10,865 cases since the start of the epidemic.
The spread of cases is significant, with 22 of the 24 municipalities reporting cases in weeks 11 and 12.
Outbreaks in the south (Saint Louis and Rivière Saint Louis (585 cases), Saint Pierre (196 cases), Ravine des Cabris (98 cases), Etang Salé (144 cases), Les Avirons (70 cases), Saint Joseph (63 cases), and Petite Ile (67 cases) remain highly active, but new clusters are emerging (Entre-Deux, Saint Philippe, Plaine des Cafres, etc.)
Viral circulation is observed in all northern municipalities: Saint Denis (10 cases), Sainte Marie (9 cases), Sainte Clotilde (8 cases), and Sainte Suzanne (7 cases), as well as in the east.
Serotype 1 has been identified among locally acquired cases: 4 cases, including 1 in Saint Denis and 3 in Petite Ile.
Five deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigation, two were considered directly linked to dengue and three indirectly linked.
