Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of June 11, 2019.

Key Points

  • In S21 and S22, more than 5,000 clinically suggestive cases were reported, bringing the total to over 42,000 since the beginning of the year.

  • The number of confirmed cases is declining (Week 21=731 and Week 22=393, unconsolidated data). More than 15,000 cases have been confirmed since the beginning of the year.

  • However, all of the island’s municipalities remain affected by viral circulation.

  • Activity in the long-standing hotspots in the south continues to decline (except in St. Joseph, where it remains stable). As has been the case for several weeks, and despite a notable decline, St. Pierre remains the largest hotspot.

  • The municipalities to monitor are those in the west and north.

  • Circulation of the DENV1 serotype is spreading among locally acquired cases.

  • Vigilance remains essential regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever).
