Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of May 13, 2019.
Key Points
In S16 and S17, 7,214 clinically suggestive cases were reported, bringing the total to over 30,000 since the beginning of the year.
The number of cases continues to rise: more than 1,300 confirmed cases reported (Weeks 16–17), bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the year to over 10,000.
All municipalities on the island are still affected by viral circulation.
Although outbreaks in the south remain very active, their share continues to decline, with cases shifting to municipalities in the west and north (to a lesser extent).
The municipalities to monitor are as follows, in the north, east, and west: St. Denis, Sainte-Suzanne, Sainte-Marie, St. André, St. Benoît, St. Paul, and La Possession; in the south: St. Joseph, L’Entre-Deux, Le Tampon, and St. Philippe.
Local circulation of the DENV1 serotype has been detected in the south (19 cases identified).
Eight deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigations, four were considered directly linked to dengue and four indirectly linked.
Vigilance remains essential regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever).
