Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of February 5, 2021.

Key Points

COVID-19

  • In the Pays de la Loire region, SARS-CoV-2 transmission remained high in S04, and most hospital indicators also remained at high levels, with disparities across departments.

  • In terms of viral circulation, a stabilization of incidence and positivity rates was observed in S04, unlike in S03, where the upward trend continued. However, this does not apply to people over 75, who are at higher risk of severe disease; among this group, the upward trend continued, and they still have the highest rates compared to other age groups.

  • The number of reported clusters in community settings and Covid-19 outbreaks in long-term care facilities (ESMS/EHPAD) in the region, which has risen sharply since the beginning of 2021, remained at high levels again in Week 4.

  • In urban areas, SOS Médecins’ activity for suspected Covid-19 cases remained at a moderate and stable level in Week 4, while the gradual increase in emergency department visits for the same reason continued at the regional level, primarily involving those over 65. The weekly number of hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients and the number of intensive care admissions stabilized at a high level in Week 4 at the regional level, as did the number of hospital deaths.

  • In Week 03, no significant excess mortality across all causes and age groups has been observed at the regional level so far (last week with significant excess: Week 50).

reference

Gastroenteritis

  • An increase in SOS Médecins calls for gastroenteritis has been observed for four consecutive weeks across all age groups, while emergency room visits remain at low levels.

Bronchiolitis in children under 2

  • The Pays de la Loire region is not currently experiencing an epidemic phase of bronchiolitis among children under two years of age. However, an increase in healthcare utilization for bronchiolitis among children under two years of age has been observed for the past two weeks, along with an increase in RSV isolations, which remain at a relatively moderate level for the time being. A transition to a pre-epidemic phase will be assessed next week.
