Antibiotic Use in French Healthcare Facilities, ATB-Raisin Network, 2008–2010.
Antibiotic use has been monitored since 2008 by participating healthcare facilities (HCFs) as part of the national ATB-Raisin network. The data collected annually cover the type of HC, the number of hospital days (HD), and the quantities of antibiotics dispensed during inpatient stays, expressed as defined daily doses (DDD) per 1,000 HD. In 2010, the 1,115 participating HEIs consumed 374 DDD/1,000 HD, with variations depending on the type of HEI and region, particularly for ceftriaxone and carbapenems. In the 662 healthcare facilities that participated for three consecutive years, total consumption, in DDDs per 1,000 patient-days, was 366 in 2008, 378 in 2009, and 389 in 2010. Consumption of ceftriaxone and carbapenems had increased by 28% and 31%, respectively. Thus, despite national programs, antibiotic consumption is not decreasing in healthcare facilities. The rise in carbapenem consumption, also observed in other European countries, illustrates the need to control the use of these antibiotics of last resort. In this context, the ATB-Raisin surveillance system makes it possible to monitor the impact of recommendations to restrict antibiotic use. For healthcare facilities, participation in the network facilitates the sharing of experiences that contribute to the optimal use of antibiotics. (R.A.)
