Surveillance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections through a laboratory network (RENAGO 1995)

RENAGO (National Gonococcal Surveillance Network) is a national network of clinical laboratories established in 1985 to conduct epidemiological surveillance of gonorrhea. Since 1993, it has been managed by the National Public Health Network (RNSP). The laboratories in this network report monthly to the RNSP the number of genital specimens with microbiological testing, and since 1994 the number of anorectal specimens, as well as epidemiological information regarding each gonococcal isolation (patient’s age and sex, clinical signs observed, site of sampling, prescribing physician, place of infection, and presence of an associated STD). Activity data (number of samples per LABM, number of gonococci identified per LABM) were calculated based on the 192 laboratories with complete annual data. (adapted from the text).
