Sexual minorities and the risk of suicide in France.

Since the 1990s, numerous studies have examined suicide risk among sexual minorities, leading to estimates of increased risk. Findings from France confirm the observations reported in the international literature. The hypothesis that homophobia is a risk factor for suicidal behavior is the strongest explanation for the higher prevalence of suicide attempts among homosexual and bisexual populations. Phenomena such as exclusion, contempt, and stigmatization can indeed lead to a loss of self-esteem and a loss of confidence in the future and in others. Specific prevention strategies must be implemented or strengthened, particularly among young people, to combat scapegoating and social distress. [author’s abstract]
