Key Points

  • In Week 40 (October 3–9, 2022), emergency department visits increased among children (+11%, or +9,942 visits) and remained stable among those aged 15 and older. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits increased among children under 2 years of age (+6%, or +204 hospitalizations) and remained stable in other age groups.

  • Seasonal respiratory indicators continue to rise, more markedly among children than adults for influenza/flu-like illness (+30% among children vs. +6% among adults), acute bronchitis (+23% vs. +16% among adults), asthma and ENT conditions, though less markedly than in previous weeks (up 9% and 7%, respectively, vs. stable among adults).

  • Among children, all indicators except for digestive conditions are on the rise, with a continued increase in visits for bronchiolitis (up 36%, or 585 more visits, and up 41%, or 210 more hospitalizations) following a trend comparable to that observed last season, and cough (+22%, or 269 more visits). Also noteworthy is the 15% increase in visits for trauma (i.e., +3,360 visits).

  • Among adults, other indicators are stable except for visits for suspected COVID-19 (+20% among those aged 15–74 and +34% among those aged 75 and older). The proportion of hospitalizations following visits remains stable (41%), and there is an increase in suicide attempts among those aged 45–64 (+24%, or +71 visits).
