Key Points
In Week 43 (October 21–27, 2024), emergency department visits increased among children under 2 years of age (+6.5%, or +1,492 visits), decreased among children aged 2–14 (-21%, or -13,939 visits), and remained stable among adults. Hospitalizations following visits follow the same trend.
Once again this week, emergency department visits related to seasonal respiratory indicators are stable or declining among children aged 2 to 14 and among adults. In contrast, among children under 2 years of age, there is an increase in visits for:
bronchiolitis (+18%, or +233 visits), though numbers remain lower than in the previous three years,
pneumonia (+49%, or 79 more visits),
asthma attacks (+9%, or 63 more visits),
acute bronchitis (+33%, or +37 visits),
influenza/flu-like illness (+40%, or +13 visits).
Among other indicators, still among children under 2 years of age, there was also an increase in visits for ENT infections (+9%, or +393 visits), isolated fever (+6%, or +114 visits), dermatological problems (+16%, or +55 visits), and conjunctivitis (+9%, or +18 visits).
Among adults, visits are on the rise, albeit from low baseline levels, for influenza/flu-like illness (+36%), ENT infections (+10%), and isolated fever (+9%) among those over 75 years of age.
