School should no longer be a place where people learn to smoke.
Drawing on several British and American studies, the author notes that, in the fight against smoking in schools, comprehensive strategies—including a school-wide smoking ban applied to everyone and everywhere, as well as the provision of smoking cessation support—are more effective than an approach limited to incorporating health education into the school curriculum. She highlights the mixed situation in French schools regarding the enforcement of the Evin Law and recalls the government’s policy directions in this area through the Cancer Plan and the Government Plan to Combat Illicit Drugs, Tobacco, and Alcohol 2004–2008. With a view to effectiveness, Sylviane Ratte recommends that prevention stakeholders propose comprehensive approaches that take into account the social environment, adult smoking, and the importance of compliance with laws, rather than multiplying one-off interventions primarily aimed at students, as is still widely requested by schools.
