Surveillance of Enteroviruses in France, 2001–2003. National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 2001–2003

Key points: - The last case of indigenous polio occurred in 1989; the last imported case occurred in 1995. - Surveillance of human-to-human and environmental circulation of enteroviruses has been strengthened since 2000. Between 2001 and 2003, no "wild" poliovirus was detected. - Top 10 non-polio enteroviruses: ECHO viruses 11, 6, 9, 30, 5, and 4, and Coxsackieviruses B5, B1, B3, and B4. - Among diagnosed enterovirus infections, the cerebrospinal form is the most common (59%).
