Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of January 4, 2017.

Key Points

Influenza and influenza-like illness: Epidemic activity (rising phase). Increase in calls to SOS Médecins (+5%), accounting for 10% of coded diagnoses. Increase in monitored indicators in hospital emergency departments (+5%). In both cases, activity is higher than in previous seasons during the same period. High activity in primary care: incidence rate of influenza-like illnesses estimated at 223 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [109, 337], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).Circulation of type A virus on the rise according to the virology laboratory at Brest University Hospital (positivity rate = 24% out of 162 samples).

Severe cases of influenza: Since week 44/2016, 19 severe cases of influenza—including 8 in week 52—in patients aged 32 to 85 years have been admitted to intensive care in Brittany. All were infected with a type A virus, and 17 had at least one risk factor targeted by vaccination.

Bronchiolitis (children under 2 years of age)Epidemic activity. Slight decrease in SOS Médecins consultations, accounting for 9% of consultations. Slight decrease in emergency department visits. Remains below seasonal averages. Viral circulation on the rise according to data from the Brest University Hospital laboratory (positivity rate = 15% out of 152 samples).

Gastroenteritis: Epidemic activity. Increase in visits to SOS Médecins emergency services (+11%), accounting for 8% of consultations. Increase in hospital emergency room visits (+20%). Activity remains above seasonal averages in both sources.High activity in primary care: incidence rate of acute diarrhea estimated at 305 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [163, 447], unconsolidated Sentinelles data). Circulation of Norovirus and Adenovirus.
