Report on the surveillance system for eye complications related to viewing the solar eclipse of September 1, 2016, in Réunion and Mayotte.
Background
On September 1, 2016, an annular solar eclipse occurred in Réunion and a partial solar eclipse in Mayotte. This phenomenon, exceptional for its beauty and rarity, posed risks to eye health, as observing a solar eclipse without proper precautions can be dangerous to the eyes. Indeed, the eye is sensitive to ultraviolet and infrared rays that penetrate it and focus on the retina. Prolonged and intense exposure to a light source—such as observing the sun without protection (or with insufficient measures)—can result in damage, particularly retinal burns, which may or may not be reversible. In light of the risks to the public, the prefectures of Réunion and Mayotte and the Indian Ocean Health Agency (ARS-OI) have launched a major public awareness campaign on the prevention of eye injuries for the general public. Epidemiological surveillance of potential effects has also been established.
