As the only European Union territory on the South American subcontinent, French Guiana has a unique character. With an annual growth rate of 3.5%, it is the most dynamic French territory in demographic terms. This growth is the result of a high natural growth rate (more births than deaths) and significant immigration. Although the social situation of the Guianese population may seem difficult—the unemployment rate, for example, stands at 26%—French Guiana nonetheless stands out as an island of prosperity compared to other islands or states in the region.[article excerpt]
