Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Update as of December 24, 2019.

Key Points

  • The circulation of the dengue virus continues at a level similar to that observed in 2018 during the same period (W49–W50). In S49, 15 cases were reported and 4 cases in S50 (unconsolidated data), bringing the total to 18,178 confirmed cases since the beginning of 2019 (Figure 1);

  • The proportion of cases reported in the East, particularly in St André, remains high in S49 and S50 despite a low number of confirmed cases.

  • St. Paul, St. Louis, and St. André are the most affected municipalities in S49 and S50.

  • The co-circulation of the two serotypes, DENV1 and DENV2, continues across the entire island, and cases of secondary dengue have been identified (see recommendations for biological confirmation, p. 2)

  • The DENV3 serotype was detected in a person who, to the best of our knowledge, had not reported traveling to an area where dengue is circulating. Further investigations are underway.

  • The upcoming vacation season is conducive to the importation of arbovirus cases and requires raising awareness among travelers.
