Surveillance of arboviral diseases in Occitanie. Review of the 2016 season and launch of the 2017 surveillance program.
Key Points
In Occitanie, from May 1 to November 30, 2016, 288 suspected cases were reported in the 8 departments under enhanced surveillance (11, 30, 31, 34, 46, 66, 81, 82):
- no locally transmitted cases were confirmed
- 142 imported cases (=returning from areas with viral circulation) were confirmed: 106 cases of Zika, 30 of dengue, 5 of chikungunya, and 1 case of flavivirus, 92% of confirmed imported cases were viremic in Level 1 departments (88% nationally), which led to vector control measures implemented around 55 cases. The median time between the onset of symptoms and reporting to the ARS was 5 days for the accelerated system, compared to 12 days for the "catch-up" laboratory system. Early reporting made it possible to reduce the time to implement vector control measures by approximately 7 days, thereby preventing the emergence of local outbreaks.
Nationally, from May 1 to November 30, 2016:
- No cases of local vector-borne transmission
- 3 cases of Zika virus infection through sexual transmission were confirmed
- 450 imported cases of Zika, 167 of dengue, 1 dengue/Zika co-infection, 9 imported cases of flavivirus, and 18 cases of chikungunya were confirmed
