Santé publique France has developed a health surveillance system known as a syndromic surveillance system, based on the collection of non-specific data. The system enables the daily centralization of information, which, as of June 1, 2024, comes from:

  • more than 700 emergency departments participating in the Coordinated Emergency Surveillance Network (OSCOUR®);

  • 62 SOS Médecins associations (data on community-based emergency medicine);

  • more than 16,000 municipalities, for mortality data, via the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE);

  • all deaths certified electronically, including cause-specific mortality data transmitted by Inserm-CépiDc.

The SurSaUD® system (Health Surveillance of Emergencies and Deaths) thus monitors 96% of emergency department activity in France, 95% of SOS Médecins activity, 85% of all-cause mortality (based on a sample of 5,000 municipalities), and 48% of cause-specific mortality.
