Promoting the health of people with disabilities [Introduction].

People with disabilities are particularly vulnerable. Their health issues, whether or not related to their disability, result in a combination of medical conditions and vulnerabilities. Furthermore, a lack of access to preventive care, medical treatment, and, more broadly, social life compounds these difficulties to the point of sometimes leading to additional disabilities. Health and social policies are therefore expected to pay particular attention to the health of these populations. Until now, access to care and medical treatment for people with disabilities have, quite rightly, been the focus of attention at the expense of a broader, more comprehensive approach that would be more aligned with a health promotion perspective.
