AIDS Surveillance in France: Status as of June 30, 1995

Since the start of the epidemic, 36,982 cases of AIDS had been recorded as of June 30, 1995. Of these cases, 60.8% are known to have died. The total number of AIDS cases since the start of the epidemic is estimated to be between 43,000 and 46,000, and the total number of deaths between 27,000 and 29,000. The number of new AIDS cases diagnosed during the first half of 1995 is estimated at 3,100: 37% are believed to have been diagnosed among homosexual/bisexual individuals, 28% among drug users, and 17% among individuals infected through heterosexual contact. The number of new cases has stabilized at around 3,000 per six-month period (between 1993 and 1995): the AIDS epidemic appears to be entering a plateau phase.
