Campylobacter Infections in France, 2002–2003. National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 2001–2003
Key points: The launch of a surveillance network for community-acquired Campylobacter infections: 3,532 strains analyzed between 2001 and 2003. The isolation rate of strains is significantly underestimated, representing only a small fraction of microbiologically confirmed Campylobacter infections: - in 2003: 3.4 per 100,000 person-years - high (14.3 per 100,000) among children under 5 years of age compared to other age groups. The C. jejuni species is predominant: C. jejuni accounts for 76% of strains, C. coli 17%, and C. fetus 5% (of which 63% were isolated from blood). Antibiotic resistance remains stable, with resistance to ampicillin (41%) and quinolones (28.5%) remaining high. To improve surveillance of Campylobacter infections, it is recommended that: - when ordering a stool culture for suspected infectious diarrhea, the clinician systematically specify "standard stool culture with screening for Campylobacter," - clinical laboratories routinely screen for Campylobacter in stool samples and participate in the surveillance system by sending their isolates to the CNR.
