Emergency department visits for acute alcohol poisoning in France in 2011. Insights from the Oscour® network.
Introduction. The objective of this study was to describe emergency department visits for acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) based on emergency department visit summaries recorded in Oscour® (Coordinated Emergency Department Surveillance Network). Materials and Methods. The Oscour® network collects data on emergency department visits representing more than half of all emergency department activity in France. The study focused on emergency department visits with ICD-10 code F10.0 (acute alcohol intoxication) recorded in this system during 2011. Results. In 2011, the number of emergency department visits for acute alcohol intoxication was 100,404 across all age groups, representing 1% of all emergency department visits. Those aged 15–24 (N=17,906; 17%) and 40–49 (N=25,477; 25%) were particularly affected. Seasonal variations (annual, monthly, weekly) revealed: - for all emergency department visits due to IEA, two peaks during the year (January 1 and June 22), an increase at the beginning of the month, particularly among those aged 40–54, and an increase on weekends; - among those aged 10–24, two peaks during the year, in June and October, a constant level of visits throughout the month, and a very marked increase on weekends. Conclusion. In the absence of objective data on the phenomenon, this study documents, on a national scale, one of the direct consequences of excessive alcohol use. (R.A.)
